PACIFIC CHUB    nenue

A streamlined, aggregating species common on shallow reefs exposed to surge.  Vertical line drawn from edge of anal fin runs just forward of caudal fin.  Silver with faint gray-brown lines, black along the upper edge of the gill opening, and a black spot at the pectoral fin base, pelvic fin tips well short of anus, 19-20 pectoral rays, 12 soft dorsal rays.  Yellow or yellow-blotched fish are rare.  White-spotted fish exhibiting rapid and erratic activity may be dominant individuals.  Attains 30 inches.  Hawaiian fish reported as Kyphosus bigibbus (in error) and Kyphosus sandwicensis are synonyms.  Hawaii and the Tropical Eastern Pacific.
