A beautiful but skittish inhabitant rarely seen along
current-swept reefs deeper than 80 feet at Midway Atoll and deeper than 300 feet in the
Main Hawaiian Islands. Attains
18 inches. Formerly reported from Hawai'i as Caprodon schlegelii,
a Japanese species with a continuous white
margin on the caudal fin of females, and dark blotches on the dorsal fin of
males. Endemic to Hawai'i.
