Rare in shallow water around the Main Hawaiian Islands but fairly common at Midway Atoll.  Gray-brown with diffuse dark brown patches and a vertical bar below the eye.  The spines are short and triangular and the fins are spotted.  Attains 21 inches.  Occurs in Hawai'i and subtropical waters worldwide.
