RED SEA BOX CRAB

Rare in sand at depths exceeding 100 feet.  The carapace has the outline of an inverted pear and the outer face of the claws are finely granular with two diagonal rows composed of larger nodules.  Attains carapace width of 2 inches.  Known from scattered locations form the Red Sea to Hawai'i and French Polynesia.  Until it's formal description as a new species in 1996 it was known in Hawai'i as Cycloes granulosa, which is restricted to the Western Pacific.
