RUBBERY or PILLOW ZOANTHIDS

Commonly forms extensive mats in areas exposed to surge.  Polyps usually closed when the ocean is rough.  Color ranges from white to gray or brown.  Texture resembles hard rubber.  Avoid contact since it may contain deadly Palytoxin.  Hawaii and the Indo-Pacific.  Formerly known as Palythoa caesia.
