HAWAIIAN MUSSEL   NAHAWELE LI‘I LI‘I

Abundant as colonies on rock exposed to wave action on benches and subtidally to 10 feet.  On flat surfaces, sand and algal turf fills gaps between each shell.  Purplish-brown with a somewhat pearly interior, fading red, yellow, and white.  Fragments are common in beach sand.  Attains 1.2 inches, 30 mm.  Endemic to Hawaii.
