HECTIC AUGER

A rare species found along beach slopes below the high water mark.  Spire often damaged, extent of dark banding variable.  Feeds on worms at night using its broad foot as a sail to surf up and down the sandy slope with successive waves, quickly burying as the water recedes.  Attains 3.2 inches, 80mm.   Red Sea to the Philippines, Hawaii, and the Society Islands.
