Terrestrial Snails

Hawai'i is home to a diverse terrestrial snail fauna, exhibiting remarkable species radiation due to isolation.  Sadly however a combination of human-initiated disturbances including invasive species, habitat alteration, and collecting has resulted in the extinction or near-extinction of many species.  Therefore most are federally endangered and protective measures in the field in addition to captive propagation are being used to assist their survival.  Unfortunately in many cases the last known individuals have not been seen during recent surveys.
