LAVENDER WHELK

Fairly common under rocks at any depth.  The lavender of fresh shells fades rapidly.  Attains 1.4 inches, 36 mm.  South Africa to Japan, Hawaii,and the Austral Islands.  Formerly known as Prodotia iostomus.
