PENNANT BUTTERFLYFISH
Mure-hatatatedai
A subtropical species locally common in aggregations near ledges, drop-offs & wrecks exposed to strong
current from 50 to 700 feet. Feeds upon zooplankton high above the reef.
Visible scales and feeding behavior easily distinguish it from the Moorish
Idol. Attains 7 inches. Spotty subtropical distribution
including the Red Sea, South Africa, Japan, Hawai'i, Australia, and New
Zealand. The benthic Heniochus acuminatus
does not occur in Hawai'i. |
