Division Ochrophyta, Brown & Golden Seaweeds

Brown Seaweeds are especially common in temperate waters, represented by well-known species including Giant Kelp, Bull Kelp & Laminaria.  The group contains chlorophyll a & c, beta carotene, fucoxanthin, and violaxanthin.  A number of small but conspicuous species occur in Hawaii on reef flats and wave benches.  Formerly known as Phaeophyta or Heterokontophyta.
