ARABIAN COWRY

Extremely rare in Hawaii, it is common elsewhere under rocks or dead coral in shallow water exposed to surf.  The dorsum has broken brown lines and the base lacks large dark blotches.  Live shells have been found in Hawaii since the 1940's, arriving on the bottom of ships or barges from the West Pacific.  Attains 3 inches, 75 mm.  Red Sea to French Polynesia.  Formerly known as Cypraea arabica.
