Family Strombidae
Strombs & Conchs
| Strombs, also known as conchs, are herbivorous snails that possess
well-developed eyes and a sickle-like operculum that can be quickly
employed as a walking aid or device to right itself. Scarce in
Hawaii, the family is diverse and well-represented in warm waters around
the world. Subfossil spider conchs and smaller species exist in
ancient reefs above sea level on Oahu, indicating that the ocean was
warmer and marine vegetation was abundant. |
