Division Rhodophyta, Red Seaweeds, Page 1

Red seaweeds are small species prolific from shallow to very deep water.  The red color comes from chlorophyll-a, phycoerythrin, & phycocyanin.  Some families are heavily calcified, including stony coralline algae which resemble pink, red, or purple rock.  Coralline algae is distinct from coral & bryozoa because it lacks pores/polyps.
